Intumescent faceplates also called cover plates are fire resistant and protection grilles which use intumescent materials to seal openings when exposed to fire and smoke. They activate during extreme heat and swell to close the opening and prevent the spread of fire and smoke.
When exposed to extreme heat, the intumescent material expands significantly (up to 10-20 times its original thickness), forming a char that seals the opening. This creates an effective barrier against fire, smoke, and hot gases without requiring any mechanical activation.
The typical fire ratings for intumescent cover plates/faceplates include 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. The fire ratings depends on the thickness and type of intumescent material used on the faceplates.
No, once the intumescent material on the faceplates has been activated by heat and expanded, the faceplate must be completely replaced. The expanded char cannot be reset or reused. This is a one-time-use fire protection device which provides valuable time and protection for people and the building
